As I walked to my meditation spot today, I noticed an abundance of mushrooms. Several different species of varying different colors. Mostly gray’s, brown’s, and white’s, with a few brilliant orange varieties. I couldn’t help feeling that there was something special about them; that they held some significance for me. As I researched these mushrooms, I learned that they can have a spiritual significance.

Connections and community were the first things that I felt a pull towards. Because mushrooms are interconnected with plants and other fungi through their mycelium, they can symbolize a connection to those around us. They can also symbolize the importance of community. Science has discovered that trees and fungi “communicate” with each other through chemical signals. Maybe they are a sign for us to better communicate with each other.

Another symbol I connected with was resilience. Mushrooms tend to grow in places where plants cannot; cold, dark and damp places. Much like a phoenix rising from the ashes, mushrooms tend to grow from the detritus of the forest floor. They grow on rotting logs and decaying leaves. They basically break down anything dead and dying and transform it into a living thing.

Which leads me to the final symbol, transformation, healing and personal growth. These fungi can tell you that it’s time to transform yourself, heal and grow. It is a reminder that when something ends, it can also be a sign of a new beginning. The ending makes room for something better to come into your life. It can be very difficult to see and feel this way during the transition. The mushroom gives us hope for the future.
